STRANGE, TRUE, AND FUN FACTS ABOUT THE SWASFAA REGION
Arkansas
  • It is illegal to mispronounce Arkansas while in the state. It must be pronounced "Arkansaw."
  • It is illegal for dogs to bark after 6:00 p.m. in Fayetteville.
  • It is illegal to keep an alligator in your bathtub in Arkansas.
  • The state prohibits moose from being viewed from airplanes. Furthermore, it is against the law to push a live moose out of a moving airplane.
  • Alma, Arkansas is the Spinach Capital of the World and commemorated this by painting its water tower to be the "world's biggest can of spinach."
Louisiana
  • Louisiana has the tallest state capitol building in the United States; the building is 450 feet tall with 34 floors.
  • Since 1835, the New Orleans & Carrollton Line is the oldest street railway line still in operation.
  • The golden spike, commemorating the completion of the east-west Vicksburg, Shreveport and Pacific Railroad, was driven at Bossier City on July 12, 1884, by Julia "Pansy" Rule. It was the first such spike driven by a woman.
  • The town of Jean Lafitte was once a hideaway for pirates.
  • The Saint Charles streetcar line in New Orleans and the San Francisco, California cable cars are the nation's only mobile national monuments.
New Mexico
  • The Rio Grande, New Mexico's longest river, runs through the entire length of the state.
  • Santa Fe is the highest capital city in the United States at 7,000 feet above sea level.
  • Blue Hole, an 81-foot deep natural artesian spring in Santa Rosa, is a favorite location for scuba divers. It is 4,600 feet above sea level, making the bottom an equivalent of nearly 100 feet of depth in the ocean.
  • White Sands National Monument is a desert, not of sand, but of gleaming white gypsum crystals.
  • More than 500, 100-million-year-old dinosaur footprints have been identified and preserved at Clayton Lake State Park.
Oklahoma
  • It is illegal to read a comic book while driving a motor vehicle.
  • The world’s first parking meter was installed in Oklahoma City on July 16, 1935.
  • In Bristow, Oklahoma it is against the law to serve water to a customer in a restaurant unless one peanut in a shell is also served. The consequences for this “serious” offence can result in a fine of up to five dollars.
  • If you play catch in the streets of Bartlesville, you’re breaking the law.
  • Whaling is illegal in the state of Oklahoma.
Texas
  • There are stalactites and stalagmites in the breezeway at the University of Texas Law School.
  • Of the nation's ten largest cities, three are in Texas (Houston, Dallas, and San Antonio).
  • The first word spoken from the moon on July 20, 1969 was "Houston".
  • The Flagship Hotel on Seawall Boulevard in Galveston is the only hotel in North America built entirely over the water.
  • It is illegal for children to have unusual haircuts in Mesquite, Texas.
